Eckoh (LON:ECK) Shareholders Booked A 74% Gain In The Last Three Years

By buying an index fund, you can roughly match the market return with ease. But many of us dare to dream of bigger returns, and build a portfolio ourselves. For example, Eckoh plc (LON:ECK) shareholders have seen the share price rise 74% over three years, well in excess of the market decline (4.1%, not including dividends).

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Eckoh was able to grow its EPS at 6.8% per year over three years, sending the share price higher. In comparison, the 20% per year gain in the share price outpaces the EPS growth. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did three years ago. It's not unusual to see the market 're-rate' a stock, after a few years of growth. This favorable sentiment is reflected in its (fairly optimistic) P/E ratio of 52.53.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

Investors should note that there's a difference between Eckoh's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Its history of dividend payouts mean that Eckoh's TSR of 81% over the last 3 years is better than the share price return.

A Different Perspective

Although it hurts that Eckoh returned a loss of 0.6% in the last twelve months, the broader market was actually worse, returning a loss of 3.0%. Of course, the long term returns are far more important and the good news is that over five years, the stock has returned 10% for each year. In the best case scenario the last year is just a temporary blip on the journey to a brighter future.
