Market Participants Recognise Moonpig Group PLC's (LON:MOON) Earnings Pushing Shares 30% Higher

Published
LSE:MOON

Moonpig Group PLC (LON:MOON) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 30% after a shaky period beforehand. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 22% is also fairly reasonable.

Since its price has surged higher, Moonpig Group may be sending bearish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 20.3x, since almost half of all companies in the United Kingdom have P/E ratios under 16x and even P/E's lower than 10x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Moonpig Group has been doing relatively well. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings performance will continue. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?

Moonpig Group's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the market.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 27%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 62% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 23% per year during the coming three years according to the nine analysts following the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 15% per annum, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.

With this information, we can see why Moonpig Group is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Final Word

The large bounce in Moonpig Group's shares has lifted the company's P/E to a fairly high level. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Moonpig Group's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
