Ground Rents Income Fund's (LON:GRIO) Shareholders Are Down 46% On Their Shares
Many investors define successful investing as beating the market average over the long term. But if you try your hand at stock picking, your risk returning less than the market. We regret to report that long term Ground Rents Income Fund PLC (LON:GRIO) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 46% in three years, versus a market decline of about 9.9%. The more recent news is of little comfort, with the share price down 26% in a year. Furthermore, it's down 13% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders. Ground Rents Income Fund wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.
Over three years, Ground Rents Income Fund grew revenue at 5.9% per year. Given it's losing money in pursuit of growth, we are not really impressed with that. As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested.
