We Think Shareholders Should Be Aware Of Some Factors Beyond NIOX Group's (LON:NIOX) Profit

How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?
To properly understand NIOX Group's profit results, we need to consider the UK£8.3m gain attributed to unusual items. We can't deny that higher profits generally leave us optimistic, but we'd prefer it if the profit were to be sustainable. We ran the numbers on most publicly listed companies worldwide, and it's very common for unusual items to be once-off in nature. And that's as you'd expect, given these boosts are described as 'unusual'. We can see that NIOX Group's positive unusual items were quite significant relative to its profit in the year to December 2022. All else being equal, this would likely have the effect of making the statutory profit a poor guide to underlying earnings power.
That might leave you wondering what analysts are forecasting in terms of future profitability. Luckily, you can click here to see an interactive graph depicting future profitability, based on their estimates.
An Unusual Tax Situation
Having already discussed the impact of the unusual items, we should also note that NIOX Group received a tax benefit of UK£3.6m. This is of course a bit out of the ordinary, given it is more common for companies to be paying tax than receiving tax benefits! The receipt of a tax benefit is obviously a good thing, on its own. However, the devil in the detail is that these kind of benefits only impact in the year they are booked, and are often one-off in nature. In the likely event the tax benefit is not repeated, we'd expect to see its statutory profit levels drop, at least in the absence of strong growth.
Our Take On NIOX Group's Profit Performance
In its last report NIOX Group received a tax benefit which might make its profit look better than it really is on a underlying level. And on top of that, it also saw an unusual item boost its profit, suggesting that next year might see a lower profit number, if these events are not repeated. On reflection, the above-mentioned factors give us the strong impression that NIOX Group'sunderlying earnings power is not as good as it might seem, based on the statutory profit numbers.
