Allergy Therapeutics plc (LON:AGY) Surges 28% Yet Its Low P/S Is No Reason For Excitement

Allergy Therapeutics plc (LON:AGY) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 28% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 81% share price drop in the last twelve months.

Although its price has surged higher, Allergy Therapeutics may still look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.7x, considering almost half of all companies in the Pharmaceuticals industry in the United Kingdom have P/S ratios greater than 4.4x and even P/S higher than 16x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How Has Allergy Therapeutics Performed Recently?

For example, consider that Allergy Therapeutics' financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. Perhaps the market believes the recent revenue performance isn't good enough to keep up the industry, causing the P/S ratio to suffer. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Allergy Therapeutics' earnings, revenue and cash flow.

How Is Allergy Therapeutics' Revenue Growth Trending?

Allergy Therapeutics' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 16% decrease to the company's top line. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 22% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 8.2% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.

With this information, we are not surprised that Allergy Therapeutics is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent revenue trends are already weighing down the shares.

What Does Allergy Therapeutics' P/S Mean For Investors?

Allergy Therapeutics' recent share price jump still sees fails to bring its P/S alongside the industry median. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

It's no surprise that Allergy Therapeutics maintains its low P/S off the back of its sliding revenue over the medium-term. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
