Little Excitement Around Jaywing plc's (LON:JWNG) Revenues

When you see that almost half of the companies in the Media industry in the United Kingdom have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 1.2x, Jaywing plc (LON:JWNG) looks to be giving off some buy signals with its 0.1x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

How Has Jaywing Performed Recently?

The revenue growth achieved at Jaywing over the last year would be more than acceptable for most companies. Perhaps the market is expecting this acceptable revenue performance to take a dive, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

How Is Jaywing's Revenue Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Jaywing's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 13% gain to the company's revenues. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen an unpleasant 19% overall drop in revenue. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to decline by 1.4% over the next year, or less than the company's recent medium-term annualised revenue decline.

With this in consideration, it's no surprise that Jaywing's P/S falls short of its industry peers. However, when revenue shrink rapidly P/S often shrinks too, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment regardless. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth, which would be difficult to do with the current industry outlook.

What Does Jaywing's P/S Mean For Investors?

We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Jaywing revealed its sharp three-year contraction in revenue is contributing to its low P/S, given the industry is set to shrink less severely. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Although, we would be concerned whether the company can even maintain its medium-term level of performance under these tough industry conditions. For now though, it's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
