If we want to find a potential multi-bagger, often there are underlying trends that can provide clues. In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. And in light of that, the trends we're seeing at AltynGold's (LON:ALTN) look very promising so lets take a look.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. To calculate this metric for AltynGold, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.34 = US$25m ÷ (US$97m - US$26m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2022).
Therefore, AltynGold has an ROCE of 34%. That's a fantastic return and not only that, it outpaces the average of 15% earned by companies in a similar industry.

The Trend Of ROCE
AltynGold has recently broken into profitability so their prior investments seem to be paying off. The company was generating losses five years ago, but now it's earning 34% which is a sight for sore eyes. In addition to that, AltynGold is employing 38% more capital than previously which is expected of a company that's trying to break into profitability. We like this trend, because it tells us the company has profitable reinvestment opportunities available to it, and if it continues going forward that can lead to a multi-bagger performance.
For the record though, there was a noticeable increase in the company's current liabilities over the period, so we would attribute some of the ROCE growth to that. Effectively this means that suppliers or short-term creditors are now funding 26% of the business, which is more than it was five years ago. Keep an eye out for future increases because when the ratio of current liabilities to total assets gets particularly high, this can introduce some new risks for the business.
Our Take On AltynGold's ROCE
Overall, AltynGold gets a big tick from us thanks in most part to the fact that it is now profitable and is reinvesting in its business. Astute investors may have an opportunity here because the stock has declined 39% in the last five years. So researching this company further and determining whether or not these trends will continue seems justified.
AltynGold does come with some risks though, we found 3 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 2 of those make us uncomfortable...
