Reflecting on Just Group's (LON:JUST) Share Price Returns Over The Last Three Years

Just Group plc (LON:JUST) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 28% in the last month. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been disappointing. In that time, the share price dropped 63%. So the improvement may be a real relief to some. While many would remain nervous, there could be further gains if the business can put its best foot forward.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During five years of share price growth, Just Group moved from a loss to profitability. That would generally be considered a positive, so we are surprised to see the share price is down. So it's worth looking at other metrics to try to understand the share price move.

Revenue is actually up 12% over the three years, so the share price drop doesn't seem to hinge on revenue, either. It's probably worth investigating Just Group further; while we may be missing something on this analysis, there might also be an opportunity.

It is of course excellent to see how Just Group has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. You can see how its balance sheet has strengthened (or weakened) over time in this free interactive graphic.

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Just Group shareholders are down 23% for the year. Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 6.4%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 10% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Just Group better, we need to consider many other factors. For example, we've discovered 2 warning signs for Just Group (1 is concerning!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
