We Ran A Stock Scan For Earnings Growth And Personal Group Holdings (LON:PGH) Passed With Ease

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.

In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like Personal Group Holdings (LON:PGH), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

How Fast Is Personal Group Holdings Growing?

If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS) outcomes. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. Personal Group Holdings managed to grow EPS by 15% per year, over three years. That growth rate is fairly good, assuming the company can keep it up.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. While we note Personal Group Holdings achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 13% to UK£44m. That's a real positive.

Are Personal Group Holdings Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Insider interest in a company always sparks a bit of intrigue and many investors are on the lookout for companies where insiders are putting their money where their mouth is. That's because insider buying often indicates that those closest to the company have confidence that the share price will perform well. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don't always get it right.

We note that Personal Group Holdings insiders spent UK£65k on stock, over the last year; in contrast, we didn't see any selling. That's nice to see, because it suggests insiders are optimistic. We also note that it was the CFO, Group Financial Controller & Executive Director, Sarah Mace, who made the biggest single acquisition, paying UK£20k for shares at about UK£2.91 each.

On top of the insider buying, we can also see that Personal Group Holdings insiders own a large chunk of the company. In fact, they own 37% of the shares, making insiders a very influential shareholder group. This should be a welcoming sign for investors because it suggests that the people making the decisions are also impacted by their choices. To give you an idea, the value of insiders' holdings in the business are valued at UK£37m at the current share price. That should be more than enough to keep them focussed on creating shareholder value!

Should You Add Personal Group Holdings To Your Watchlist?

One important encouraging feature of Personal Group Holdings is that it is growing profits. In addition, insiders have been busy adding to their sizeable holdings in the company. These factors alone make the company an interesting prospect for your watchlist, as well as continuing research. You still need to take note of risks, for example - Personal Group Holdings has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
