PHSC plc (LON:PHSC) Not Doing Enough For Some Investors As Its Shares Slump 27%
The PHSC plc (LON:PHSC) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 27%. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 52% share price decline.
Following the heavy fall in price, PHSC's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 10.7x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in the United Kingdom, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 16x and even P/E's above 30x are quite common. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
For instance, PHSC's receding earnings in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the disappointing earnings performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is PHSC's Growth Trending?
PHSC's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 51%. At least EPS has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 18% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.
With this information, we can see why PHSC is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the bourse.
The Final Word
PHSC's P/E has taken a tumble along with its share price. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that PHSC maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider market forecast, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
You should always think about risks. Case in point, we've spotted 4 warning signs for PHSC you should be aware of, and 1 of them can't be ignored.
