Should You Be Adding Plus500 (LON:PLUS) To Your Watchlist Today?
Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'
So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Plus500 (LON:PLUS). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

How Quickly Is Plus500 Increasing Earnings Per Share?
The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so share price follows earnings per share (EPS) eventually. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. I, for one, am blown away by the fact that Plus500 has grown EPS by 39% per year, over the last three years. Growth that fast may well be fleeting, but like a lotus blooming from a murky pond, it sparks joy for the wary stock pickers.
Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Plus500 maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 90% to US$771m. That's a real positive.

Are Plus500 Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Like the kids in the streets standing up for their beliefs, insider share purchases give me reason to believe in a brighter future. This view is based on the possibility that stock purchases signal bullishness on behalf of the buyer. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don't always get it right.
One shining light for Plus500 is the serious outlay one insider has made to buy shares, in the last year. Specifically, in one large transaction Senior Strategy Advisor Alon Gonen paid UK£8.6m, for stock at UK£7.99 per share. It doesn't get much better than that, in terms of large investments from insiders.
Along with the insider buying, another encouraging sign for Plus500 is that insiders, as a group, have a considerable shareholding. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth US$92m. I would find that kind of skin in the game quite encouraging, if I owned shares, since it would ensure that the leaders of the company would also experience my success, or failure, with the stock.
Is Plus500 Worth Keeping An Eye On?
Plus500's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. The cherry on top is that insiders own a bunch of shares, and one has been buying more. This quick rundown suggests that the business may be of good quality, and also at an inflection point, so maybe Plus500 deserves timely attention. Even so, be aware that Plus500 is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is a bit unpleasant...
