River Global Plc (LON:RVRG) Held Back By Insufficient Growth Even After Shares Climb 38%
River Global Plc (LON:RVRG) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 38% gain and recovering from prior weakness. But the last month did very little to improve the 76% share price decline over the last year.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, River Global may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.7x, considering almost half of all companies in the Capital Markets industry in the United Kingdom have P/S ratios greater than 3.2x and even P/S higher than 9x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Has River Global Performed Recently?
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, River Global's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

River Global's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 9.7%. The latest three year period has seen an incredible overall rise in revenue, a stark contrast to the last 12 months. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company, but investors will want to ask why it is now in decline.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 12% as estimated by the sole analyst watching the company. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to expand by 0.08%, which paints a poor picture.
In light of this, it's understandable that River Global's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
The Final Word
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift River Global's P/S close to the industry median. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
As we suspected, our examination of River Global's analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking revenue is contributing to its low P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 4 warning signs with River Global (at least 2 which are significant), and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
