Polar Capital Holdings (LON:POLR) Is Paying Out A Larger Dividend Than Last Year
Polar Capital Holdings plc (LON:POLR) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend on the 14th of January to UK£0.14, which will be 56% higher than last year. This will take the dividend yield from 5.0% to 5.6%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

Polar Capital Holdings' Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Prior to this announcement, Polar Capital Holdings' dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This indicates that quite a large proportion of earnings is being invested back into the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 5.1% over the next year. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 74% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Polar Capital Holdings Has A Solid Track Record
Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. Since 2011, the first annual payment was UK£0.075, compared to the most recent full-year payment of UK£0.40. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 18% a year over that time. It is good to see that there has been strong dividend growth, and that there haven't been any cuts for a long time.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. It's encouraging to see Polar Capital Holdings has been growing its earnings per share at 30% a year over the past five years. The company doesn't have any problems growing, despite returning a lot of capital to shareholders, which is a very nice combination for a dividend stock to have.
We'd also point out that Polar Capital Holdings has issued stock equal to 11% of shares outstanding. Regularly doing this can be detrimental - it's hard to grow dividends per share when new shares are regularly being created.
We Really Like Polar Capital Holdings' Dividend
In summary, it is always positive to see the dividend being increased, and we are particularly pleased with its overall sustainability. Distributions are quite easily covered by earnings, which are also being converted to cash flows. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
