We Think Rank Group (LON:RNK) Can Stay On Top Of Its Debt

Howard Marks put it nicely when he said that, rather than worrying about share price volatility, 'The possibility of permanent loss is the risk I worry about... and every practical investor I know worries about.' When we think about how risky a company is, we always like to look at its use of debt, since debt overload can lead to ruin. We note that The Rank Group Plc (LON:RNK) does have debt on its balance sheet. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?

Why Does Debt Bring Risk?

Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. Ultimately, if the company can't fulfill its legal obligations to repay debt, shareholders could walk away with nothing. However, a more common (but still painful) scenario is that it has to raise new equity capital at a low price, thus permanently diluting shareholders. By replacing dilution, though, debt can be an extremely good tool for businesses that need capital to invest in growth at high rates of return. When we examine debt levels, we first consider both cash and debt levels, together.

What Is Rank Group's Net Debt?

As you can see below, Rank Group had UK£30.2m of debt at June 2025, down from UK£43.9m a year prior. However, its balance sheet shows it holds UK£75.4m in cash, so it actually has UK£45.2m net cash.

How Healthy Is Rank Group's Balance Sheet?

According to the last reported balance sheet, Rank Group had liabilities of UK£195.9m due within 12 months, and liabilities of UK£214.9m due beyond 12 months. Offsetting this, it had UK£75.4m in cash and UK£16.6m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities total UK£318.8m more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.

While this might seem like a lot, it is not so bad since Rank Group has a market capitalization of UK£650.2m, and so it could probably strengthen its balance sheet by raising capital if it needed to. However, it is still worthwhile taking a close look at its ability to pay off debt. Despite its noteworthy liabilities, Rank Group boasts net cash, so it's fair to say it does not have a heavy debt load!

It is well worth noting that Rank Group's EBIT shot up like bamboo after rain, gaining 54% in the last twelve months. That'll make it easier to manage its debt. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately the future profitability of the business will decide if Rank Group can strengthen its balance sheet over time. So if you're focused on the future you can check out this free report showing analyst profit forecasts.

Finally, a company can only pay off debt with cold hard cash, not accounting profits. Rank Group may have net cash on the balance sheet, but it is still interesting to look at how well the business converts its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) to free cash flow, because that will influence both its need for, and its capacity to manage debt. Over the last three years, Rank Group actually produced more free cash flow than EBIT. That sort of strong cash generation warms our hearts like a puppy in a bumblebee suit.

Summing Up

Although Rank Group's balance sheet isn't particularly strong, due to the total liabilities, it is clearly positive to see that it has net cash of UK£45.2m. The cherry on top was that in converted 139% of that EBIT to free cash flow, bringing in UK£67m. So we don't think Rank Group's use of debt is risky. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. To that end, you should be aware of the 1 warning sign we've spotted with Rank Group .
