Insufficient Growth At Domino's Pizza Group plc (LON:DOM) Hampers Share Price
Domino's Pizza Group plc's (LON:DOM) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 11.2x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in the United Kingdom, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 18x and even P/E's above 31x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
Domino's Pizza Group certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings performance might be less impressive moving forward. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Domino's Pizza Group's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 47% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 60% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the eight analysts covering the company suggest earnings growth is heading into negative territory, declining 2.3% each year over the next three years. That's not great when the rest of the market is expected to grow by 15% per annum.
In light of this, it's understandable that Domino's Pizza Group's P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. However, shrinking earnings are unlikely to lead to a stable P/E over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
The Key Takeaway
Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
As we suspected, our examination of Domino's Pizza Group's analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking earnings is contributing to its low P/E. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
