Character Group's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. Before making this announcement, Character Group was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. This means that most of what the business earns is being used to help it grow.
Over the next year, EPS could expand by 2.5% if recent trends continue. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 26% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2011, the first annual payment was UK£0.06, compared to the most recent full-year payment of UK£0.18. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 12% a year over that time. Character Group has grown distributions at a rapid rate despite cutting the dividend at least once in the past. Companies that cut once often cut again, so we would be cautious about buying this stock solely for the dividend income.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Earnings have grown at around 2.5% a year for the past five years, which isn't massive but still better than seeing them shrink. While EPS growth is quite low, Character Group has the option to increase the payout ratio to return more cash to shareholders.
Our Thoughts On Character Group's Dividend
Overall, it's great to see the dividend being raised and that it is still in a sustainable range. The payout ratio looks good, but unfortunately the company's dividend track record isn't stellar. Taking all of this into consideration, the dividend looks viable moving forward, but investors should be mindful that the company has pushed the boundaries of sustainability in the past and may do so again.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
