Sureserve Group (LON:SUR) Is Looking To Continue Growing Its Returns On Capital
If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. So when we looked at Sureserve Group (LON:SUR) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Sureserve Group, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.15 = UK£9.7m ÷ (UK£113m - UK£49m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2021).
So, Sureserve Group has an ROCE of 15%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Commercial Services industry average of 11% it's much better.

What Can We Tell From Sureserve Group's ROCE Trend?
We're pretty happy with how the ROCE has been trending at Sureserve Group. The data shows that returns on capital have increased by 160% over the trailing five years. That's not bad because this tells for every dollar invested (capital employed), the company is increasing the amount earned from that dollar. Speaking of capital employed, the company is actually utilizing 45% less than it was five years ago, which can be indicative of a business that's improving its efficiency. A business that's shrinking its asset base like this isn't usually typical of a soon to be multi-bagger company.
On a side note, Sureserve Group's current liabilities are still rather high at 43% of total assets. This effectively means that suppliers (or short-term creditors) are funding a large portion of the business, so just be aware that this can introduce some elements of risk. While it's not necessarily a bad thing, it can be beneficial if this ratio is lower.
The Key Takeaway
In the end, Sureserve Group has proven it's capital allocation skills are good with those higher returns from less amount of capital. And a remarkable 118% total return over the last five years tells us that investors are expecting more good things to come in the future. Therefore, we think it would be worth your time to check if these trends are going to continue.
