Did Changing Sentiment Drive Rosenblatt Group's (LON:RBGP) Share Price Down By 12%?

While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the Rosenblatt Group Plc (LON:RBGP) share price has gained 24% in the last three months. But in truth the last year hasn't been good for the share price. In fact, the price has declined 12% in a year, falling short of the returns you could get by investing in an index fund.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Unhappily, Rosenblatt Group had to report a 4.3% decline in EPS over the last year. The share price decline of 12% is actually more than the EPS drop. So it seems the market was too confident about the business, a year ago.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).
It's good to see that there was some significant insider buying in the last three months. That's a positive. That said, we think earnings and revenue growth trends are even more important factors to consider. What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Rosenblatt Group's TSR for the last year was -9.3%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
We doubt Rosenblatt Group shareholders are happy with the loss of 9.3% over twelve months (even including dividends). That falls short of the market, which lost 1.5%. There's no doubt that's a disappointment, but the stock may well have fared better in a stronger market. It's great to see a nice little 24% rebound in the last three months. Let's just hope this isn't the widely-feared 'dead cat bounce' (which would indicate further declines to come).
