Johnson Service Group (LON:JSG) Is Reinvesting At Lower Rates Of Return
If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. However, after investigating Johnson Service Group (LON:JSG), we don't think it's current trends fit the mold of a multi-bagger.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Johnson Service Group, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.025 = UK£8.2m ÷ (UK£409m - UK£79m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2021).
Therefore, Johnson Service Group has an ROCE of 2.5%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Commercial Services industry average of 8.4%.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Johnson Service Group Tell Us?
In terms of Johnson Service Group's historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. Around five years ago the returns on capital were 11%, but since then they've fallen to 2.5%. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
What We Can Learn From Johnson Service Group's ROCE
In summary, despite lower returns in the short term, we're encouraged to see that Johnson Service Group is reinvesting for growth and has higher sales as a result. And there could be an opportunity here if other metrics look good too, because the stock has declined 16% in the last five years. As a result, we'd recommend researching this stock further to uncover what other fundamentals of the business can show us.
