Fintel (LON:FNTL) Will Pay A Larger Dividend Than Last Year At £0.0245

Fintel Plc (LON:FNTL) will increase its dividend on the 18th of June to £0.0245, which is 4.3% higher than last year's payment from the same period of £0.0235. Although the dividend is now higher, the yield is only 1.5%, which is below the industry average.

Fintel's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions

If it is predictable over a long period, even low dividend yields can be attractive. Prior to this announcement, Fintel's dividend was only 64% of earnings, however it was paying out 834% of free cash flows. The company might be more focused on returning cash to shareholders, but paying out this much of its cash flow could expose the dividend to being cut in the future.

Analysts expect a massive rise in earnings per share in the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio will be 19%, which makes us pretty comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

Fintel's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency

Even in its relatively short history, the company has reduced the dividend at least once. This makes us cautious about the consistency of the dividend over a full economic cycle. The dividend has gone from an annual total of £0.0196 in 2018 to the most recent total annual payment of £0.0365. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 9.3% per annum over that time. We like to see dividends have grown at a reasonable rate, but with at least one substantial cut in the payments, we're not certain this dividend stock would be ideal for someone intending to live on the income.

Dividend Growth Is Doubtful

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. In the last five years, Fintel's earnings per share has shrunk at approximately 9.4% per annum. Declining earnings will inevitably lead to the company paying a lower dividend in line with lower profits. However, the next year is actually looking up, with earnings set to rise. We would just wait until it becomes a pattern before getting too excited.

The Dividend Could Prove To Be Unreliable

Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Fintel will make a great income stock. While the low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. We don't think Fintel is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
