Flowtech Fluidpower Might Find It Hard To Continue The Dividend
We aren't too impressed by dividend yields unless they can be sustained over time. Flowtech Fluidpower is not generating a profit, but its free cash flows easily cover the dividend, leaving plenty for reinvestment in the business. In general, cash flows are more important than the more traditional measures of profit so we feel pretty comfortable with the dividend at this level.
EPS has fallen by an average of 50.5% in the past, so this could continue over the next year. This means that the company will be unprofitable, but cash flows are more important when considering the dividend and as the current cash payout ratio is pretty healthy, we don't think there is too much reason to worry.
Flowtech Fluidpower's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
Even in its relatively short history, the company has reduced the dividend at least once. If the company cuts once, it definitely isn't argument against the possibility of it cutting in the future. Since 2014, the dividend has gone from £0.0334 total annually to £0.021. This works out to be a decline of approximately 5.0% per year over that time. Generally, we don't like to see a dividend that has been declining over time as this can degrade shareholders' returns and indicate that the company may be running into problems.
The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential
With a relatively unstable dividend, and a poor history of shrinking dividends, it's even more important to see if EPS is growing. Flowtech Fluidpower's EPS has fallen by approximately 50% per year during the past five years. Dividend payments are likely to come under some pressure unless EPS can pull out of the nosedive it is in.
Flowtech Fluidpower's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable
Overall, we don't think this company makes a great dividend stock, even though the dividend wasn't cut this year. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
