Veolia Environnement (EPA:VIE) Has Announced That It Will Be Increasing Its Dividend To €1.40
Veolia Environnement SA (EPA:VIE) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 14th of May to €1.40. The payment will take the dividend yield to 4.3%, which is in line with the average for the industry.
Veolia Environnement's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings
While it is always good to see a solid dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is feasible. The last payment made up 84% of earnings, but cash flows were much higher. In general, cash flows are more important than earnings, so we are comfortable that the dividend will be sustainable going forward, especially with so much cash left over for reinvestment.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 47.8%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 61%, which would make us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend, despite the levels currently being quite high.

Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from €0.70 total annually to €1.40. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 7.2% a year over that time. A reasonable rate of dividend growth is good to see, but we're wary that the dividend history is not as solid as we'd like, having been cut at least once.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. Earnings per share has been crawling upwards at 4.5% per year. There are exceptions, but limited earnings growth and a high payout ratio can signal that a company has reached maturity. That's fine as far as it goes, but we're less enthusiastic as this often signals that the dividend is likely to grow slower in the future.
Our Thoughts On Veolia Environnement's Dividend
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. In the past, the payments have been unstable, but over the short term the dividend could be reliable, with the company generating enough cash to cover it. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. To that end, Veolia Environnement has 2 warning signs (and 1 which is potentially serious) we think you should know about. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
