Does Transgene's (EPA:TNG) Share Price Gain of 62% Match Its Business Performance?

If you want to compound wealth in the stock market, you can do so by buying an index fund. But investors can boost returns by picking market-beating companies to own shares in. For example, the Transgene SA (EPA:TNG) share price is up 62% in the last year, clearly besting the market decline of around 3.8% (not including dividends). If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! Unfortunately the longer term returns are not so good, with the stock falling 27% in the last three years.

Given that Transgene didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

Transgene grew its revenue by 69% last year. That's well above most other pre-profit companies. The solid 62% share price gain goes down pretty well, but it's not necessarily as good as you might expect given the top notch revenue growth. So quite frankly it could be a good time to investigate Transgene in some detail. Human beings have trouble conceptualizing (and valuing) exponential growth. Is that what we're seeing here?

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Transgene shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 62% over one year. There's no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 5% per year over five years. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
