Improved Revenues Required Before Genfit S.A. (EPA:GNFT) Stock's 29% Jump Looks Justified

Genfit S.A. (EPA:GNFT) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 29% after a shaky period beforehand. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 24% is also fairly reasonable.

Even after such a large jump in price, Genfit's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.8x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the Biotechs industry in France, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 4.2x and even P/S above 26x are quite common. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Genfit Performed Recently?

Genfit could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. Perhaps the market is expecting the current trend of poor revenue growth to continue, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Genfit would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 106% gain to the company's top line. Despite this strong recent growth, it's still struggling to catch up as its three-year revenue frustratingly shrank by 17% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the three analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 4.6% per year over the next three years. With the industry predicted to deliver 74% growth per annum, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.

With this information, we can see why Genfit is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

The Bottom Line On Genfit's P/S

Despite Genfit's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Genfit's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
