bioMérieux S.A. (EPA:BIM) Not Lagging Market On Growth Or Pricing

bioMérieux S.A.'s (EPA:BIM) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 33x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in France, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 14x and even P/E's below 8x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.

With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, bioMérieux has been doing quite well of late. It seems that many are expecting the company to continue defying the broader market adversity, which has increased investors’ willingness to pay up for the stock. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think bioMérieux's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

How Is bioMérieux's Growth Trending?

bioMérieux's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the market.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 6.4%. Ultimately though, it couldn't turn around the poor performance of the prior period, with EPS shrinking 19% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 17% per annum as estimated by the analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 14% per year growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's understandable that bioMérieux's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Final Word

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that bioMérieux maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
