A Piece Of The Puzzle Missing From Spineway SA's (EPA:ALSPW) 57% Share Price Climb
The Spineway SA (EPA:ALSPW) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 57%. Unfortunately, despite the strong performance over the last month, the full year gain of 7.4% isn't as attractive.
Although its price has surged higher, Spineway may still look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x, considering almost half of all companies in the Medical Equipment industry in France have P/S ratios greater than 2.8x and even P/S higher than 5x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Spineway's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Spineway over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Spineway would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 1.6%. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 91% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would definitely welcome the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Comparing that recent medium-term revenue trajectory with the industry's one-year growth forecast of 4.6% shows it's noticeably more attractive.
With this information, we find it odd that Spineway is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
What Does Spineway's P/S Mean For Investors?
Spineway's recent share price jump still sees fails to bring its P/S alongside the industry median. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We're very surprised to see Spineway currently trading on a much lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we assume there are some significant underlying risks to the company's ability to make money which is applying downwards pressure on the P/S ratio. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see a lot of volatility.
