Why Investors Shouldn't Be Surprised By Median Technologies SA's (EPA:ALMDT) 39% Share Price Surge
Median Technologies SA (EPA:ALMDT) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 39% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Unfortunately, despite the strong performance over the last month, the full year gain of 5.6% isn't as attractive.
After such a large jump in price, given around half the companies in France's Healthcare Services industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 2.3x, you may consider Median Technologies as a stock to avoid entirely with its 6.1x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Median Technologies' P/S Mean For Shareholders?
With revenue growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, Median Technologies has been relatively sluggish. It might be that many expect the uninspiring revenue performance to recover significantly, which has kept the P/S ratio from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Median Technologies' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 4.8%. However, due to its less than impressive performance prior to this period, revenue growth is practically non-existent over the last three years overall. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 31% each year as estimated by the four analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 12% per year, which is noticeably less attractive.
With this information, we can see why Median Technologies is trading at such a high P/S compared to the industry. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
What Does Median Technologies' P/S Mean For Investors?
Shares in Median Technologies have seen a strong upwards swing lately, which has really helped boost its P/S figure. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
We've established that Median Technologies maintains its high P/S on the strength of its forecasted revenue growth being higher than the the rest of the Healthcare Services industry, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in revenues is quite remote, justifying the elevated P/S ratio. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
