Subdued Growth No Barrier To Wendel's (EPA:MF) Price

With a median price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of close to 15x in France, you could be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Wendel's (EPA:MF) P/E ratio of 13.6x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/E without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

Wendel hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining earnings compare poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth on average. One possibility is that the P/E is moderate because investors think this poor earnings performance will turn around. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Is There Some Growth For Wendel?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/E like Wendel's is when the company's growth is tracking the market closely.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 65% decrease to the company's bottom line. At least EPS has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say that earnings growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the three analysts covering the company suggest earnings growth is heading into negative territory, declining 17% per year over the next three years. With the market predicted to deliver 11% growth per annum, that's a disappointing outcome.

With this information, we find it concerning that Wendel is trading at a fairly similar P/E to the market. Apparently many investors in the company reject the analyst cohort's pessimism and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the negative growth outlook.

The Bottom Line On Wendel's P/E

We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We've established that Wendel currently trades on a higher than expected P/E for a company whose earnings are forecast to decline. Right now we are uncomfortable with the P/E as the predicted future earnings are unlikely to support a more positive sentiment for long. Unless these conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.

We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 3 warning signs for Wendel (1 is a bit concerning!) that you need to be mindful of.
