Derichebourg (EPA:DBG) Has Gifted Shareholders With A Fantastic 117% Total Return On Their Investment
It's been a soft week for Derichebourg SA (EPA:DBG) shares, which are down 11%. On the bright side the returns have been quite good over the last half decade. After all, the share price is up a market-beating 94% in that time. While the returns over the last 5 years have been good, we do feel sorry for those shareholders who haven't held shares that long, because the share price is down 31% in the last three years.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Derichebourg's earnings per share are down 7.4% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years.
This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Because earnings per share don't seem to match up with the share price, we'll take a look at other metrics instead.
In contrast revenue growth of 3.5% per year is probably viewed as evidence that Derichebourg is growing, a real positive. In that case, the company may be sacrificing current earnings per share to drive growth.
The company's revenue and earnings (over time) are depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).
It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
Investors should note that there's a difference between Derichebourg's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. Its history of dividend payouts mean that Derichebourg's TSR of 117% over the last 5 years is better than the share price return.
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Derichebourg has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 70% in the last twelve months. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 17% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Derichebourg better, we need to consider many other factors.
