Investors can buy low cost index fund if they want to receive the average market return. But in any diversified portfolio of stocks, you'll see some that fall short of the average. For example, the Bureau Veritas SA (EPA:BVI) share price return of 14% over three years lags the market return in the same period. Unfortunately, the share price has fallen 6.9% over twelve months.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During three years of share price growth, Bureau Veritas achieved compound earnings per share growth of 9.4% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 4.5% average annual increase in the share price. So one could reasonably conclude that the market has cooled on the stock.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Bureau Veritas the TSR over the last 3 years was 24%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

Bureau Veritas shareholders are down 4.5% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 5.8%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 3.8% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. Before deciding if you like the current share price, check how Bureau Veritas scores on these 3 valuation metrics.
