Société BIC (EPA:BB) Will Pay A Larger Dividend Than Last Year At €2.85
The board of Société BIC SA (EPA:BB) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of €2.85 on the 12th of June, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This will take the annual payment to 4.2% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

Société BIC's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. Prior to this announcement, Société BIC's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 37.7%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 40%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Dividend Volatility
The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of €2.60 in 2014 to the most recent total annual payment of €2.85. Its dividends have grown at less than 1% per annum over this time frame. We're glad to see the dividend has risen, but with a limited rate of growth and fluctuations in the payments the total shareholder return may be limited.
Société BIC Could Grow Its Dividend
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. We are encouraged to see that Société BIC has grown earnings per share at 6.9% per year over the past five years. Shareholders are getting plenty of the earnings returned to them, which combined with strong growth makes this quite appealing.
Our Thoughts On Société BIC's Dividend
In summary, it's great to see that the company can raise the dividend and keep it in a sustainable range. The payout ratio looks good, but unfortunately the company's dividend track record isn't stellar. Taking all of this into consideration, the dividend looks viable moving forward, but investors should be mindful that the company has pushed the boundaries of sustainability in the past and may do so again.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. For instance, we've picked out 1 warning sign for Société BIC that investors should take into consideration. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
