How Much Did Sogeclair's(EPA:SOG) Shareholders Earn From Share Price Movements Over The Last Three Years?
If you love investing in stocks you're bound to buy some losers. But the last three years have been particularly tough on longer term Sogeclair SA (EPA:SOG) shareholders. Sadly for them, the share price is down 65% in that time. Shareholders have had an even rougher run lately, with the share price down 13% in the last 90 days.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
Over the three years that the share price declined, Sogeclair's earnings per share (EPS) dropped significantly, falling to a loss. This was, in part, due to extraordinary items impacting earnings. Due to the loss, it's not easy to use EPS as a reliable guide to the business. However, we can say we'd expect to see a falling share price in this scenario.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Sogeclair the TSR over the last 3 years was -62%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Sogeclair provided a TSR of 24% over the last twelve months. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 0.2% per year over five year. This suggests the company might be improving over time. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
