Here's Why Prodways Group (EPA:PWG) Can Afford Some Debt
David Iben put it well when he said, 'Volatility is not a risk we care about. What we care about is avoiding the permanent loss of capital.' So it seems the smart money knows that debt - which is usually involved in bankruptcies - is a very important factor, when you assess how risky a company is. Importantly, Prodways Group SA (EPA:PWG) does carry debt. But the more important question is: how much risk is that debt creating?
What Risk Does Debt Bring?
Debt assists a business until the business has trouble paying it off, either with new capital or with free cash flow. Ultimately, if the company can't fulfill its legal obligations to repay debt, shareholders could walk away with nothing. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. Having said that, the most common situation is where a company manages its debt reasonably well - and to its own advantage. The first thing to do when considering how much debt a business uses is to look at its cash and debt together.

How Much Debt Does Prodways Group Carry?
As you can see below, at the end of June 2024, Prodways Group had €17.0m of debt, up from €15.7m a year ago. Click the image for more detail. However, it does have €13.2m in cash offsetting this, leading to net debt of about €3.86m.
A Look At Prodways Group's Liabilities
Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that Prodways Group had liabilities of €25.8m due within 12 months and liabilities of €17.8m due beyond that. On the other hand, it had cash of €13.2m and €16.8m worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by €13.5m.
This deficit isn't so bad because Prodways Group is worth €22.8m, and thus could probably raise enough capital to shore up its balance sheet, if the need arose. But it's clear that we should definitely closely examine whether it can manage its debt without dilution. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine Prodways Group's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. So if you want to see what the professionals think, you might find this free report on analyst profit forecasts to be interesting.
In the last year Prodways Group had a loss before interest and tax, and actually shrunk its revenue by 24%, to €63m. To be frank that doesn't bode well.
Caveat Emptor
Not only did Prodways Group's revenue slip over the last twelve months, but it also produced negative earnings before interest and tax (EBIT). Indeed, it lost a very considerable €6.0m at the EBIT level. Considering that alongside the liabilities mentioned above does not give us much confidence that company should be using so much debt. So we think its balance sheet is a little strained, though not beyond repair. Another cause for caution is that is bled €470k in negative free cash flow over the last twelve months. So suffice it to say we do consider the stock to be risky. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. For example, we've discovered 1 warning sign for Prodways Group that you should be aware of before investing here.
