Arcure S.A.'s (EPA:ALCUR) 34% Share Price Surge Not Quite Adding Up

Published
ENXTPA:ALCUR

Arcure S.A. (EPA:ALCUR) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 34% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. The last month tops off a massive increase of 150% in the last year.

Since its price has surged higher, you could be forgiven for thinking Arcure is a stock not worth researching with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 1.5x, considering almost half the companies in France's Electrical industry have P/S ratios below 0.6x. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/S.

How Arcure Has Been Performing

Arcure certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue more than most other companies. It seems the market expects this form will continue into the future, hence the elevated P/S ratio. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Is There Enough Revenue Growth Forecasted For Arcure?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the industry for P/S ratios like Arcure's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 25% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 107% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 7.4% during the coming year according to the dual analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be similar to the 6.8% growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Arcure's P/S is higher than its industry peers. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly average growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh down the share price eventually.

The Final Word

Arcure shares have taken a big step in a northerly direction, but its P/S is elevated as a result. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

Seeing as its revenues are forecast to grow in line with the wider industry, it would appear that Arcure currently trades on a higher than expected P/S. Right now we are uncomfortable with the relatively high share price as the predicted future revenues aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. This places shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.

We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 3 warning signs for Arcure that you need to be mindful of.
