Puuilo Oyj (HEL:PUUILO) Is Increasing Its Dividend To €0.35
Puuilo Oyj (HEL:PUUILO) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 2nd of June to €0.35. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 4.0%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.
Puuilo Oyj's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings
A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. The last dividend made up a very large portion of earnings and also represented 92% of free cash flows. This indicates that the company is more focused on returning cash to shareholders than growing the business, but we don't think that there are necessarily signs that the dividend might be unsustainable.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 48.5%. Under the assumption that the dividend will continue along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 69% which would be quite comfortable going to take the dividend forward.

Puuilo Oyj Doesn't Have A Long Payment History
The dividend has been pretty stable looking back, but the company hasn't been paying one for very long. This makes it tough to judge how it would fare through a full economic cycle. Since 2022, the dividend has gone from €0.30 total annually to €0.46. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 15% over that duration. We're not overly excited about the relatively short history of dividend payments, however the dividend is growing at a nice rate and we might take a closer look.
Dividend Growth Could Be Constrained
Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. It's encouraging to see that Puuilo Oyj has been growing its earnings per share at 25% a year over the past five years. EPS is growing rapidly, although the company is also paying out a large portion of its profits as dividends. If earnings keep growing, the dividend may be sustainable, but generally we'd prefer to see a fast growing company reinvest in further growth.
Our Thoughts On Puuilo Oyj's Dividend
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Puuilo Oyj's payments are rock solid. In general, the distributions are a little bit higher than we would like, but we can't ignore the fact the quickly growing earnings gives this stock great potential in the future. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
