We Think Huhtamäki Oyj (HEL:HUH1V) Can Stay On Top Of Its Debt
Legendary fund manager Li Lu (who Charlie Munger backed) once said, 'The biggest investment risk is not the volatility of prices, but whether you will suffer a permanent loss of capital.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. As with many other companies Huhtamäki Oyj (HEL:HUH1V) makes use of debt. But the more important question is: how much risk is that debt creating?
Why Does Debt Bring Risk?
Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. Part and parcel of capitalism is the process of 'creative destruction' where failed businesses are mercilessly liquidated by their bankers. However, a more frequent (but still costly) occurrence is where a company must issue shares at bargain-basement prices, permanently diluting shareholders, just to shore up its balance sheet. Of course, debt can be an important tool in businesses, particularly capital heavy businesses. The first step when considering a company's debt levels is to consider its cash and debt together.

How Much Debt Does Huhtamäki Oyj Carry?
The chart below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that Huhtamäki Oyj had €1.65b in debt in September 2024; about the same as the year before. However, it does have €408.1m in cash offsetting this, leading to net debt of about €1.25b.
How Strong Is Huhtamäki Oyj's Balance Sheet?
The latest balance sheet data shows that Huhtamäki Oyj had liabilities of €1.26b due within a year, and liabilities of €1.62b falling due after that. Offsetting this, it had €408.1m in cash and €729.9m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by €1.73b.
Huhtamäki Oyj has a market capitalization of €3.58b, so it could very likely raise cash to ameliorate its balance sheet, if the need arose. However, it is still worthwhile taking a close look at its ability to pay off debt.
We measure a company's debt load relative to its earnings power by looking at its net debt divided by its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and by calculating how easily its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) cover its interest expense (interest cover). This way, we consider both the absolute quantum of the debt, as well as the interest rates paid on it.
Huhtamäki Oyj has net debt worth 2.2 times EBITDA, which isn't too much, but its interest cover looks a bit on the low side, with EBIT at only 5.8 times the interest expense. While that doesn't worry us too much, it does suggest the interest payments are somewhat of a burden. Importantly, Huhtamäki Oyj grew its EBIT by 42% over the last twelve months, and that growth will make it easier to handle its debt. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately the future profitability of the business will decide if Huhtamäki Oyj can strengthen its balance sheet over time. So if you want to see what the professionals think, you might find this free report on analyst profit forecasts to be interesting.
Finally, a company can only pay off debt with cold hard cash, not accounting profits. So the logical step is to look at the proportion of that EBIT that is matched by actual free cash flow. In the last three years, Huhtamäki Oyj's free cash flow amounted to 31% of its EBIT, less than we'd expect. That's not great, when it comes to paying down debt.
Our View
On our analysis Huhtamäki Oyj's EBIT growth rate should signal that it won't have too much trouble with its debt. However, our other observations weren't so heartening. For example, its conversion of EBIT to free cash flow makes us a little nervous about its debt. Considering this range of data points, we think Huhtamäki Oyj is in a good position to manage its debt levels. But a word of caution: we think debt levels are high enough to justify ongoing monitoring. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. Be aware that Huhtamäki Oyj is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis , you should know about...
