Does Terveystalo Oyj (HEL:TTALO) Have A Healthy Balance Sheet?
Some say volatility, rather than debt, is the best way to think about risk as an investor, but Warren Buffett famously said that 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' So it seems the smart money knows that debt - which is usually involved in bankruptcies - is a very important factor, when you assess how risky a company is. We note that Terveystalo Oyj (HEL:TTALO) does have debt on its balance sheet. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?
Why Does Debt Bring Risk?
Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. Ultimately, if the company can't fulfill its legal obligations to repay debt, shareholders could walk away with nothing. However, a more common (but still painful) scenario is that it has to raise new equity capital at a low price, thus permanently diluting shareholders. Of course, the upside of debt is that it often represents cheap capital, especially when it replaces dilution in a company with the ability to reinvest at high rates of return. The first step when considering a company's debt levels is to consider its cash and debt together.

How Much Debt Does Terveystalo Oyj Carry?
As you can see below, Terveystalo Oyj had €422.4m of debt, at September 2023, which is about the same as the year before. You can click the chart for greater detail. However, because it has a cash reserve of €35.4m, its net debt is less, at about €387.0m.
How Healthy Is Terveystalo Oyj's Balance Sheet?
We can see from the most recent balance sheet that Terveystalo Oyj had liabilities of €324.1m falling due within a year, and liabilities of €581.1m due beyond that. Offsetting these obligations, it had cash of €35.4m as well as receivables valued at €141.7m due within 12 months. So its liabilities total €728.1m more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.
This is a mountain of leverage relative to its market capitalization of €949.2m. Should its lenders demand that it shore up the balance sheet, shareholders would likely face severe dilution.
We use two main ratios to inform us about debt levels relative to earnings. The first is net debt divided by earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), while the second is how many times its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) covers its interest expense (or its interest cover, for short). Thus we consider debt relative to earnings both with and without depreciation and amortization expenses.
Terveystalo Oyj has a debt to EBITDA ratio of 2.7 and its EBIT covered its interest expense 3.5 times. This suggests that while the debt levels are significant, we'd stop short of calling them problematic. The good news is that Terveystalo Oyj grew its EBIT a smooth 59% over the last twelve months. Like a mother's loving embrace of a newborn that sort of growth builds resilience, putting the company in a stronger position to manage its debt. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine Terveystalo Oyj's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. So if you want to see what the professionals think, you might find this free report on analyst profit forecasts to be interesting.
Finally, while the tax-man may adore accounting profits, lenders only accept cold hard cash. So it's worth checking how much of that EBIT is backed by free cash flow. Over the last three years, Terveystalo Oyj actually produced more free cash flow than EBIT. That sort of strong cash generation warms our hearts like a puppy in a bumblebee suit.
Our View
The good news is that Terveystalo Oyj's demonstrated ability to convert EBIT to free cash flow delights us like a fluffy puppy does a toddler. But truth be told we feel its interest cover does undermine this impression a bit. It's also worth noting that Terveystalo Oyj is in the Healthcare industry, which is often considered to be quite defensive. All these things considered, it appears that Terveystalo Oyj can comfortably handle its current debt levels. Of course, while this leverage can enhance returns on equity, it does bring more risk, so it's worth keeping an eye on this one. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. We've identified 4 warning signs with Terveystalo Oyj , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
