The board of Apetit Oyj (HEL:APETIT) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of €0.75 on the 22nd of April, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This takes the dividend yield to 5.8%, which shareholders will be pleased with.

Apetit Oyj's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions

While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. Prior to this announcement, Apetit Oyj's dividend was only 48% of earnings, however it was paying out 212% of free cash flows. While the company may be more focused on returning cash to shareholders than growing the business at this time, we think that a cash payout ratio this high might expose the dividend to being cut if the business ran into some challenges.

EPS is set to fall by 39.4% over the next 12 months. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could be 73%, which we consider to be quite comfortable, with most of the company's earnings left over to grow the business in the future.

Dividend Volatility

The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. The annual payment during the last 10 years was €0.90 in 2014, and the most recent fiscal year payment was €0.75. This works out to be a decline of approximately 1.8% per year over that time. Declining dividends isn't generally what we look for as they can indicate that the company is running into some challenges.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Apetit Oyj has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 56% per annum. Apetit Oyj is clearly able to grow rapidly while still returning cash to shareholders, positioning it to become a strong dividend payer in the future.

In Summary

Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. While the low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. We don't think Apetit Oyj is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
