Konecranes (HEL:KCR) Could Easily Take On More Debt

Howard Marks put it nicely when he said that, rather than worrying about share price volatility, 'The possibility of permanent loss is the risk I worry about... and every practical investor I know worries about.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. We note that Konecranes Plc (HEL:KCR) does have debt on its balance sheet. But should shareholders be worried about its use of debt?

What Risk Does Debt Bring?

Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. By replacing dilution, though, debt can be an extremely good tool for businesses that need capital to invest in growth at high rates of return. What Is Konecranes's Net Debt?

As you can see below, Konecranes had €743.3m of debt at March 2025, down from €960.9m a year prior. However, it does have €598.5m in cash offsetting this, leading to net debt of about €144.8m.

A Look At Konecranes' Liabilities

According to the last reported balance sheet, Konecranes had liabilities of €1.95b due within 12 months, and liabilities of €882.2m due beyond 12 months. Offsetting these obligations, it had cash of €598.5m as well as receivables valued at €845.1m due within 12 months. So it has liabilities totalling €1.39b more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.

This deficit isn't so bad because Konecranes is worth €5.43b, and thus could probably raise enough capital to shore up its balance sheet, if the need arose. But it's clear that we should definitely closely examine whether it can manage its debt without dilution.

In order to size up a company's debt relative to its earnings, we calculate its net debt divided by its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) divided by its interest expense (its interest cover). The advantage of this approach is that we take into account both the absolute quantum of debt (with net debt to EBITDA) and the actual interest expenses associated with that debt (with its interest cover ratio).

Konecranes's net debt is only 0.24 times its EBITDA. And its EBIT covers its interest expense a whopping 24.6 times over. So you could argue it is no more threatened by its debt than an elephant is by a mouse. Also positive, Konecranes grew its EBIT by 28% in the last year, and that should make it easier to pay down debt, going forward. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately the future profitability of the business will decide if Konecranes can strengthen its balance sheet over time. Finally, a company can only pay off debt with cold hard cash, not accounting profits. So the logical step is to look at the proportion of that EBIT that is matched by actual free cash flow. During the last three years, Konecranes produced sturdy free cash flow equating to 79% of its EBIT, about what we'd expect. This cold hard cash means it can reduce its debt when it wants to.

Our View

The good news is that Konecranes's demonstrated ability to cover its interest expense with its EBIT delights us like a fluffy puppy does a toddler. And that's just the beginning of the good news since its conversion of EBIT to free cash flow is also very heartening. Considering this range of factors, it seems to us that Konecranes is quite prudent with its debt, and the risks seem well managed. So we're not worried about the use of a little leverage on the balance sheet. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt.
