Returns On Capital Are Showing Encouraging Signs At Commcenter (BME:CMM)
What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. So when we looked at Commcenter (BME:CMM) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Commcenter:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.045 = €801k ÷ (€38m - €20m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2021).
Therefore, Commcenter has an ROCE of 4.5%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Electronic industry average of 10%.

How Are Returns Trending?
The fact that Commcenter is now generating some pre-tax profits from its prior investments is very encouraging. About five years ago the company was generating losses but things have turned around because it's now earning 4.5% on its capital. Not only that, but the company is utilizing 61% more capital than before, but that's to be expected from a company trying to break into profitability. We like this trend, because it tells us the company has profitable reinvestment opportunities available to it, and if it continues going forward that can lead to a multi-bagger performance.
On a side note, Commcenter's current liabilities are still rather high at 53% of total assets. This effectively means that suppliers (or short-term creditors) are funding a large portion of the business, so just be aware that this can introduce some elements of risk. While it's not necessarily a bad thing, it can be beneficial if this ratio is lower.
The Bottom Line
To the delight of most shareholders, Commcenter has now broken into profitability. Since the stock has returned a solid 54% to shareholders over the last five years, it's fair to say investors are beginning to recognize these changes. In light of that, we think it's worth looking further into this stock because if Commcenter can keep these trends up, it could have a bright future ahead.
