When close to half the companies in Spain have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 16x, you may consider Prosegur Cash, S.A. (BME:CASH) as an attractive investment with its 12.2x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

Prosegur Cash could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. It seems that many are expecting the dour earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Prosegur Cash's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Prosegur Cash would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 33%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 306% overall rise in EPS, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would probably welcome the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 30% each year during the coming three years according to the seven analysts following the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 12% each year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Prosegur Cash's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From Prosegur Cash's P/E?

Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our examination of Prosegur Cash's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
