Fluidra, S.A. (BME:FDR) is reducing its dividend from last year's comparable payment to €0.2025 on the 3rd of December. Despite the cut, the dividend yield of 2.9% will still be comparable to other companies in the industry.

Fluidra's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
Solid dividend yields are great, but they only really help us if the payment is sustainable. Before this announcement, Fluidra was paying out 92% of earnings, but a comparatively small 29% of free cash flows. In general, cash flows are more important than earnings, so we are comfortable that the dividend will be sustainable going forward, especially with so much cash left over for reinvestment.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 131.2%. Assuming the dividend continues along the course it has been charting recently, our estimates show the payout ratio being 40% which brings it into quite a comfortable range.
Dividend Volatility
The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. The dividend has gone from an annual total of €0.07 in 2014 to the most recent total annual payment of €0.55. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 23% per annum over that time. Despite the rapid growth in the dividend over the past number of years, we have seen the payments go down the past as well, so that makes us cautious.
Fluidra May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. Slow growth and a high payout ratio could mean that Fluidra has maxed out the amount that it has been able to pay to shareholders. This isn't the end of the world, but for investors looking for strong dividend growth they may want to look elsewhere.
Our Thoughts On Fluidra's Dividend
In summary, dividends being cut isn't ideal, however it can bring the payment into a more sustainable range. In the past, the payments have been unstable, but over the short term the dividend could be reliable, with the company generating enough cash to cover it. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
