Fluidra, S.A. (BME:FDR) has announced that it will pay a dividend of €0.243 per share on the 3rd of December. Based on this payment, the dividend yield for the company will be 2.6%, which is fairly typical for the industry.

Fluidra's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions

We like a dividend to be consistent over the long term, so checking whether it is sustainable is important. The last payment made up 79% of earnings, but cash flows were much higher. This leaves plenty of cash for reinvestment into the business.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 91.4%. Assuming the dividend continues along the course it has been charting recently, our estimates show the payout ratio being 39% which brings it into quite a comfortable range.

Dividend Volatility

The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was €0.06 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was €0.60. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 26% a year over that time. It is great to see strong growth in the dividend payments, but cuts are concerning as it may indicate the payout policy is too ambitious.

Dividend Growth Could Be Constrained

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. Fluidra has grown its EPS by 32% over the past 12 months. It's unusual for a company to continue this long term, but we won't complain when it happens. Earnings per share is growing nicely, but the company is paying out most of its earnings as dividends. This might be sustainable, but we wonder why Fluidra is not retaining those earnings to reinvest in growth. We do note though, one year is too short a time to be drawing strong conclusions about a company's future prospects.

Our Thoughts On Fluidra's Dividend

Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. In the past, the payments have been unstable, but over the short term the dividend could be reliable, with the company generating enough cash to cover it. We don't think Fluidra is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach.
