These days it's easy to simply buy an index fund, and your returns should (roughly) match the market. But you can do a lot better than that by buying good quality businesses for attractive prices. For example, the Columbus A/S (CPH:COLUM) share price is up 49% in the last five years, slightly above the market return. It's also good to see that the stock is up 17% in a year.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Columbus' earnings per share are down 14% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years. The impact of extraordinary items on earnings, in the last year, partially explain the diversion.

This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

In contrast revenue growth of 14% per year is probably viewed as evidence that Columbus is growing, a real positive. In that case, the company may be sacrificing current earnings per share to drive growth.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

Investors should note that there's a difference between Columbus' total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. Columbus' TSR of 55% for the 5 years exceeded its share price return, because it has paid dividends.

A Different Perspective

Columbus shareholders are up 17% for the year. But that return falls short of the market. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 9% per year over five year. This could indicate that the company is winning over new investors, as it pursues its strategy. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that Columbus is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is a bit concerning...
