Shareholders in Vestas Wind Systems (CPH:VWS) are in the red if they invested a year ago

Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 16% in the last month. But that is minimal compensation for the share price under-performance over the last year. In fact, the price has declined 46% in a year, falling short of the returns you could get by investing in an index fund.

Now let's have a look at the company's fundamentals, and see if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the last year Vestas Wind Systems grew its earnings per share, moving from a loss to a profit.

Earnings per share growth rates aren't particularly useful for comparing with the share price, when a company has moved from loss to profit. So it makes sense to check out some other factors.

Given the yield is quite low, at 0.5%, we doubt the dividend can shed much light on the share price. Vestas Wind Systems managed to grow revenue over the last year, which is usually a real positive. Since the fundamental metrics don't readily explain the share price drop, there might be an opportunity if the market has overreacted.

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Vestas Wind Systems shareholders are down 46% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 31%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 5% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Vestas Wind Systems better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example - Vestas Wind Systems has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
