Deutsche Telekom's (ETR:DTE) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year
Deutsche Telekom AG (ETR:DTE) will increase its dividend on the 11th of April to €0.70, which is 9.4% higher than last year's payment from the same period of €0.64. This makes the dividend yield about the same as the industry average at 3.4%.

Deutsche Telekom's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
Unless the payments are sustainable, the dividend yield doesn't mean too much. The last dividend was quite easily covered by Deutsche Telekom's earnings. This indicates that a lot of the earnings are being reinvested into the business, with the aim of fueling growth.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 36.3%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 35% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.
Dividend Volatility
The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. The dividend has gone from an annual total of €0.70 in 2012 to the most recent total annual payment of €0.64. Payments have been decreasing at a very slow pace in this time period. A company that decreases its dividend over time generally isn't what we are looking for.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Deutsche Telekom has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 324% per annum. The company doesn't have any problems growing, despite returning a lot of capital to shareholders, which is a very nice combination for a dividend stock to have.
We Really Like Deutsche Telekom's Dividend
Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Deutsche Telekom is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
