Market Might Still Lack Some Conviction On Cherry SE (ETR:C3RY) Even After 25% Share Price Boost
Those holding Cherry SE (ETR:C3RY) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 25% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. But the last month did very little to improve the 57% share price decline over the last year.
Although its price has surged higher, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Cherry's P/S ratio of 0.4x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Tech industry in Germany is also close to 0.6x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

What Does Cherry's Recent Performance Look Like?
Cherry has been struggling lately as its revenue has declined faster than most other companies. It might be that many expect the dismal revenue performance to revert back to industry averages soon, which has kept the P/S from falling. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping it doesn't keep underperforming if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's not in favour.

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like Cherry's is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 14% decrease to the company's top line. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 240% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 8.3% per year as estimated by the four analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 5.7% per year growth forecast for the broader industry.
In light of this, it's curious that Cherry's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are skeptical of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.
The Final Word
Cherry appears to be back in favour with a solid price jump bringing its P/S back in line with other companies in the industry It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that Cherry currently trades on a lower than expected P/S since its forecasted revenue growth is higher than the wider industry. Perhaps uncertainty in the revenue forecasts are what's keeping the P/S ratio consistent with the rest of the industry. It appears some are indeed anticipating revenue instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
