David Iben put it well when he said, 'Volatility is not a risk we care about. What we care about is avoiding the permanent loss of capital.' It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. We note that Cliq Digital AG (ETR:CLIQ) does have debt on its balance sheet. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.
When Is Debt A Problem?
Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. Part and parcel of capitalism is the process of 'creative destruction' where failed businesses are mercilessly liquidated by their bankers. While that is not too common, we often do see indebted companies permanently diluting shareholders because lenders force them to raise capital at a distressed price. Of course, plenty of companies use debt to fund growth, without any negative consequences. The first thing to do when considering how much debt a business uses is to look at its cash and debt together.

How Much Debt Does Cliq Digital Carry?
The image below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that at December 2022 Cliq Digital had debt of €6.56m, up from €4.96m in one year. However, it does have €16.9m in cash offsetting this, leading to net cash of €10.4m.
A Look At Cliq Digital's Liabilities
We can see from the most recent balance sheet that Cliq Digital had liabilities of €31.2m falling due within a year, and liabilities of €22.6m due beyond that. On the other hand, it had cash of €16.9m and €13.6m worth of receivables due within a year. So it has liabilities totalling €23.2m more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.
Of course, Cliq Digital has a market capitalization of €176.9m, so these liabilities are probably manageable. Having said that, it's clear that we should continue to monitor its balance sheet, lest it change for the worse. While it does have liabilities worth noting, Cliq Digital also has more cash than debt, so we're pretty confident it can manage its debt safely.
In addition to that, we're happy to report that Cliq Digital has boosted its EBIT by 60%, thus reducing the spectre of future debt repayments. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But ultimately the future profitability of the business will decide if Cliq Digital can strengthen its balance sheet over time. So if you're focused on the future you can check out this free report showing analyst profit forecasts.
But our final consideration is also important, because a company cannot pay debt with paper profits; it needs cold hard cash. While Cliq Digital has net cash on its balance sheet, it's still worth taking a look at its ability to convert earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) to free cash flow, to help us understand how quickly it is building (or eroding) that cash balance. Over the most recent three years, Cliq Digital recorded free cash flow worth 55% of its EBIT, which is around normal, given free cash flow excludes interest and tax. This free cash flow puts the company in a good position to pay down debt, when appropriate.
Summing Up
Although Cliq Digital's balance sheet isn't particularly strong, due to the total liabilities, it is clearly positive to see that it has net cash of €10.4m. And we liked the look of last year's 60% year-on-year EBIT growth. So is Cliq Digital's debt a risk? It doesn't seem so to us. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. Be aware that Cliq Digital is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those makes us a bit uncomfortable...
