To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. So when we looked at PVA TePla (ETR:TPE) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What is it?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. The formula for this calculation on PVA TePla is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.20 = €18m ÷ (€180m - €86m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2021).
Therefore, PVA TePla has an ROCE of 20%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Semiconductor industry average of 6.9% it's much better.

So How Is PVA TePla's ROCE Trending?
Investors would be pleased with what's happening at PVA TePla. Over the last five years, returns on capital employed have risen substantially to 20%. The company is effectively making more money per dollar of capital used, and it's worth noting that the amount of capital has increased too, by 59%. So we're very much inspired by what we're seeing at PVA TePla thanks to its ability to profitably reinvest capital.
On a side note, we noticed that the improvement in ROCE appears to be partly fueled by an increase in current liabilities. Essentially the business now has suppliers or short-term creditors funding about 48% of its operations, which isn't ideal. And with current liabilities at those levels, that's pretty high.
In Conclusion...
To sum it up, PVA TePla has proven it can reinvest in the business and generate higher returns on that capital employed, which is terrific. Since the stock has returned a staggering 1,218% to shareholders over the last five years, it looks like investors are recognizing these changes. So given the stock has proven it has promising trends, it's worth researching the company further to see if these trends are likely to persist.
