Lacklustre Performance Is Driving SUSS MicroTec SE's (ETR:SMHN) 30% Price Drop
SUSS MicroTec SE (ETR:SMHN) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 30% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 46% share price drop.
Although its price has dipped substantially, SUSS MicroTec's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 10.9x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in Germany, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 20x and even P/E's above 39x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.
With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, SUSS MicroTec has been doing relatively well. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings performance might be less impressive moving forward. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?
SUSS MicroTec's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 129% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 244% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the seven analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 1.6% per year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 17% each year, which is noticeably more attractive.
With this information, we can see why SUSS MicroTec is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
The Final Word
SUSS MicroTec's recently weak share price has pulled its P/E below most other companies. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
As we suspected, our examination of SUSS MicroTec's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook is contributing to its low P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
